International Day Against Nuclear Testing is being celebrated globally since 2010 on 29 August.  The day aims to raise awareness of the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their elimination as one of the means to achieve the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests through its unanimous acceptance of Resolution 64/35.  International Day Against Nuclear Testing was celebrated for the first time in 2010.

International Day Against Nuclear Testing is observed every year on 29 August.  It is celebrated to commemorate the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and to achieve the goal of a nuclear weapon free world.  For the first time this day was celebrated in 2010.  Several attempts have been made to prevent nuclear testing.  Let’s know about these efforts…

On 02 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to ban the use of nuclear weapons.  After this, 29 August was declared as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. 

Why International Day Against Nuclear Testing Celebrated

  • It is celebrated to spread awareness and education about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means to achieve the goal of a nuclear weapon free world. 
  • On August 29, 1991, Kazakhstan conducted a nuclear test in Semipalatinsk.  This resolution was brought against this nuclear test.  Later the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site was closed. 
  • The day emphasizes the need to inform, educate and ban nuclear weapons testing by UN member states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and the media. 
  • Several bilateral and multilateral government-level efforts as well as widespread people’s movements highlighted the importance of banning nuclear tests. 
  • International Day Against Nuclear Testing was started in 2010.  Every year various meetings, conferences, exhibitions and competitions are organized on this occasion.

In addition, it was reassured that the only way to avoid the use or threat of nuclear weapons is nuclear disarmament and a complete ban on nuclear weapons.  Subsequently, the United Nations General Assembly declared 26 September as the ‘International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons’.  The day is dedicated to advance the objective of total elimination of nuclear weapons through international efforts. International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was observed for the first time in September 2014.

The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)) of 1996 is the only means to completely eliminate nuclear testing, but unfortunately it has not yet come into force.

  • Nuclear tests can be easily banned by the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.  It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 September 1996.  So far 184 countries have signed this treaty and 168 countries have ratified it.
  • States with significant nuclear capabilities must also ratify the treaty for it to be implemented.  Please tell that India and Pakistan have not signed this treaty.
  • Although the consensus of the international community is that nuclear weapons testing poses life-threatening risks, there should be some degree of nuclear weapons testing because nuclear weapons are not tested for their reliability and capability.  Information will not be available.  This can increase other hazards as well.
  • Activities and events on the International Day Against Nuclear Testing are pushing for the implementation of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
  • The International Monitoring System of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization assures that there will be no nuclear explosions. 
  • However, nothing can play a significant role in avoiding nuclear war or a nuclear terrorist threat except a complete ban on nuclear weapons. 
  • The ban on nuclear explosions would automatically restrict the production of nuclear weapons.

  • 1957: The International Atomic Energy Agency was created to promote and monitor the peaceful use of nuclear technology. 
  • August 5, 1963: Representatives of the US, Soviet Union and Great Britain signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.  The treaty prohibits the testing of nuclear weapons in outer space, underwater or in the atmosphere.
  • June 12, 1968: The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 2373, supporting the draft of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
  • 26 May 1972: US President Richard M. Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev sign the Interim Agreement on Arms Limitation Negotiations (SALT-I), the first agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union to limit their nuclear arsenals during the Cold War.  did.

Steps taken for nuclear non-proliferation 

  • 11 April 1995: The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 984.  In this, the five nuclear-weapon states said not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against those states that do not have nuclear weapons. 
  • 1996: The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which prohibited nuclear tests. 
  • 5 February 2011: New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) came into force.  The United States and Russia agreed to reduce the use of strategic and offensive weapons.  Under the New START, the number of nuclear weapons and bombs in the strategic area was reduced to 1,550 in both states. 
  • June 2011: The United Kingdom voluntarily announced reductions in its planned nuclear forces by 2015.  After the reduction, the United Kingdom would have 120 nuclear weapons in the strategic area and 60 nuclear warheads to support the maintenance and management of the operational force. 
  • 7 July 2017: A United Nations convention adopts the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.  It was the first international treaty to ban nuclear weapons on a large scale.  This includes a ban on the manufacture, acquisition, testing, use and possession of nuclear weapons.  Although no nuclear-capable states signed the treaty, the treaty is an important one in the politics of nuclear disarmament. 
  • 2018: NWS (Nuclear Weapon States) reduced nuclear weapons from 70,000 to 14,200.
