World Peace Day, or ‘International Day of Peace’, is celebrated every year on ’21 September’.  This day is considered an ideal of freedom, peace and happiness among all nations and peoples.  ‘World Peace Day’ is mainly celebrated to establish peace and non-violence on the whole earth.  Everyone loves peace.  Humans sacrifice most of their lives in search of it. 

But it is quite disappointing that today man is getting away from this peace day by day.  Today, the marketing spread all around has made peace even further away from the individual.  The earth, the sky and the ocean are all turbulent.  Selfishness and hatred have fragmented human society.  Although the message of ‘world peace’ has been given in every era and in every era, but the number of those who have implemented it has been very less. 

International Day of Peace History

Starting from the year 1982 till 2001 September the third Tuesday of the month was chosen for International Day of Peace or World Peace Day, but from the year 2002 it was declared as the day of 21 September.  The theme of ‘World Peace Day’ for the year 2012 was “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future”.

International Day of Peace: Objective

Today, the main goal of the United Nations is to maintain peace in the whole world.  The United Nations Charter also clearly mentions that the United Nations was born to prevent international conflict and develop a culture of peace.  In this time of conflict, terror and unrest, it has become very important and relevant to propagate the importance of peace. 

That is why the United Nations, all its institutions, non-governmental organizations, civil society and national governments organize ‘International Day of Peace’ every year on 21 September.  To take the message of peace to every nook and corner of the world, the United Nations has appointed world famous personalities of art, literature, cinema, music and sports as peace ambassadors.  The United Nations General Assembly dedicated this day three decades ago to the strengthening of peaceful ideas among all countries and their inhabitants.

There is an ideal of freedom, peace and happiness within and among all countries and/or peoples.  World peace is a means of establishing non-violence throughout the earth, whereby countries cooperate either voluntarily or willingly through a system of governance, so as to prevent war.  Although sometimes the term is used to mean the end of all enmity between all individuals for the sake of world peace.

Many Buddhists believe that there can be world peace only when we first establish peace within our mind.  Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism said, “Peace comes from within. Don’t seek it without it.”  This means that anger and other negative states of mind are due to war and fighting.  Buddhists believe that people can live in peace and harmony only when we let go of negative emotions like anger and cultivate positive emotions like love and compassion. 

International Day of Peace 2023 Theme

International Day of Peace 2023 theme of this year is “End racism. Build peace“.  Last year the theme of International Day of Peace 2020 was “Shaping Peace Together” and the theme of 2019 was ‘Climate Action for Peace’.

Through which an attempt was made to give a message to the people that it is necessary to control climate change to maintain peace in the world, that is, the change in climate can prove to be very fatal for the peace and security of the world.  Let us also tell you that the theme of the first World Peace Day is ‘Right to Peace of People’ was chosen. 

World Peace Day: Ringing Bell 

In order to take this matter to the world, the United Nations has appointed famous personalities from every field like literature, art, cinema, music and sports as peacemakers.  World Peace Day begins with the ringing of the United Nations Peace Bell at the United Nations Headquarters.  In which it is written on one side that there should always be peace in the world.  This bell is made from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa.

Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Prime Minister of India, had given 5 basic mantras to establish peace in the world, which are also called ‘Principles of Panchsheel’.  These five principles are as follows – 

  • Respecting each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
  • Do not take aggressive action against each other.
  • Do not interfere in each other’s internal matters.
  • To follow the policy of equality and mutual benefit.
  • Having faith in the policy of peaceful coexistence.
