Kerala Nurses Strike: On Wednesday, March 04, 2026, hundreds of nurses working in Private hospitals across Kerala launched an indefinite major strike demanding fair pay, better working environment and formal wage structure. Following months of unresolved demands and dissatisfaction amongst nurses for salary revisions, the protest began on March 04, 2026 organised and led by the United Nurses Association (UNA) — a union which represents the nursing professionals in the state.
Kerala, a state known for its effective and efficient healthcare system, is facing serious issues with this major strike affecting hundreds of hospitals and thousands of patients.
The issue has captured public attention as nurses from approximately 490 private hospitals and clinics have stopped their regular duties and are only offering emergency services.
Why Are Nurses Protesting? — Reasons Behind the Strike
The major reasons for the strike is focussed on enduring problems: nurses say they are underpaid, undervalued and overworked. According to union leaders and protesters:
- The salaries of nursing staff have not been revised since 2018 even though the Kerala government issued a pay hike order in 2023, that remained unimplemented in most of the private hospitals. Nurses complained that the salary structure is not even enough to fulfill their living costs.
- The demand for the minimum monthly salary of Rs. 40,000 for all nurses working in private hospitals.
- Nurses are demanding a clear and uniform wage system that will be applicable for all private hospitals, aiming to eliminate unfair pay and differences in facilities.
- Because of unfair pay and improper working conditions, many nurses feel compelled to leave for better opportunities abroad, leading to a “brain drain” in Kerala’s healthcare workforce.
Protestors remarked, “Nowadays the nursing sector is heading towards businesses”. “Majority of qualified and experienced nurses are going abroad seeking fair salary and good working conditions”.
Protesters further argue that while government hospital nurses have uniform pay and regular salary revisions, private hospital nurses face inconsistent salaries based on management decisions instead of government implemented policies.
Key Demands: What Nurses Are Asking For
The strike has focused on several demands, the key demands are summarised below:
- Minimum Basic Salary of ₹40,000 per month for all private hospital nurses, ensuring fair pay and financial stability.
- Implementation of Pending Wage Revisions
- Safe and fair working conditions for nurses
- A standardised and uniform pay mechanism across private hospitals, in line with Nursing Council regulations
- Improved nurse-to-patient ratios and reduced work pressure to prevent burnout
- Effective enforcement of labour laws

How the Strike is Impacting the Healthcare Services
The strike has significantly disrupted the routine healthcare services in private hospitals across the state.
- Nearly 490 private hospitals are impacted affecting the routine healthcare services, however protestors assured that the emergency services will not be disrupted
- The strike has raised a question on lack of implementation of laws and policies for uniform wage policies.
- It has again highlighted a debate point over fair pay, labour rights and improper working conditions in Kerala’s healthcare system.
The Struggle for Dignity: A Systemic Void
The Kerala nurses’ strike for fair pay highlights a painful reality: those who provide essential care are often the most exploited. While we call them heroes, they must fight for basic survival. But have we ever paused to ask: why must a life of service be marred by such scarcity? Why does human effort consistently fall short of providing lasting security? This struggle reflects a deeper, unanswered gap in our societal structures.
The Spiritual Root of All Conflict
Jagatguru Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj reveals that all suffering stems from an unseen karmic account. This world is not our home; it is a realm of exile ruled by Kaal Brahm (Satan), where conflict and decay are inevitable laws. No material solution or strike can break these karmic chains. True abundance is only found in Satlok — our eternal home. By adopting the scripture-based worship shown by Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj, we can transcend this cycle of sorrow and find permanent peace.
