Renowned author Mannu Bhandari passed away at the age of 90, noted for his classic works like ‘Mahabhoj’ and ‘Aapka Bunty’

Mannu Bhandari: Mannu Bhandari, the author of classic works like ‘Mahabhoj’ and ‘Aapka Bunty’, has died at the age of 90. Mannu Bhandari, the famous writer of Hindi literature, died on Monday.  She was 90 years old.  He was born on 3rd April, 1939 in Bhanpura village of Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh.  Classical compositions like ‘Mahabhoj’ and ‘Aapka Bunty’ made him a mark.  However, till now the information has not been received as to what has been the reason for the death of the writer.  She was recognized as a writer who attacked the malevolent society.  Hearing the news of Mannu Bhandari’s death, there has been an influx of people paying tribute to him on social media. 

Mannu Bhandari wrote more than one great stories and novels.  Movies have also been made on the books written by him.  The film ‘Rajnigandha’ was made in 1974 based on his story ‘Yi Sach Hai’.  Basu Chatterjee made this film.  One of his famous works is ‘Aapka Bunty’.  Bhandari’s husband was well-known litterateur Rajendra Yadav.  His parents named him Mahendra Kumari.  But after taking his step in the writing field, he changed his name to Mannu.  The reason behind this was that people used to call him as Mannu in his childhood.  People kept calling him by the name of Mannu Bhandari throughout his life.

Mannu Bhandari also did a long teaching job at Miranda House College, Delhi University.  People remember him for his contribution to Hindi literature.  People get a glimpse of her real personality after reading the collections ‘I Lost’, ‘A Picture of Three Eyes’, ‘Ek Plate Saabab’, ‘Yeh Sach Hai’, ‘Aankhon Dekha Jhooth’ and ‘Hung’.  Let us tell you that Mannu Bhandari married the famous Hindi writer Rajendra Yadav.  He was also the editor of Hans.  However, the relationship of both came on the verge of ending after a while.  After decades of marriage, the two separated.  Both lived separately till the last time of Rajendra Yadav.

The novel ‘Aapka Bunty’ can be read to understand the sorrows and pains of his life.  In this, he has mentioned the tragedy after the breakup of his marriage.  This novel brought him fame.  Another novel ‘Mahabhoj’ by Mannu Bhandari tells about the valuelessness, gimmicks in politics, social life.  In this novel, there is a story of village Saroha, where after the death of a character named Bisesar, all the politicians prove their selfishness by keeping him in the political center.

Mannu Bhandari Born: April 3, 1931 is a modern Hindi story writer and novelist.  Born in 1931 in Bhanpura town of Madhya Pradesh, Mannu Bhandari has the distinction of being the best writer.  Mannu Bhandari has penned both the story and the novel.  His novel ‘Ek Inch Muskaan’ written with Rajendra Yadav is a sad love story of educated and modern people.  His novel ‘Aapka Bunty’, written with the central theme of a child suffocating in the tragedy of marriage breakdown, is kept in the line of successful Hindi novels.  The play based on his novel ‘Mahabhoj’, which portrayed the depth of the common man’s suffering and pain, became very popular.  The film ‘Rajnigandha’, based on his ‘Yhi Sach Hai’ work, was a big hit at the box office.

Career of Mannu Bhandari

After teaching at Ballygunge Shiksha Sadan (1952–61), Rani Birla College (1961–64), she became a professor of Hindi at Miranda College in 1964 and worked until she retired (1991).  After retiring, she was the director (1992-94) of Premchand Srijanpeeth in Ujjain for two years.

Mannu Bhandari has written both stories and novels.  ‘Ek Plate Sailab’ (1962), ‘I Lost’ (1957), ‘A Picture of Three Eyes’, ‘Yehi Sach Hai’ (1966), ‘Trishanku’ and ‘Aankhon Dekha Jhooth’ are his important story collections.  His novel ‘Aapka Bunty’ (1971), written keeping a child in the center of the tragedy of divorce, is counted among the most successful novels of Hindi.  His novel ‘Ek Inch Muskaan’ (1962), co-written with author Rajendra Yadav, is a tragic love story of educated modern people, each issue of which was written by the author-duo.  You have also written a play titled ‘Ghar without walls’ (1966).

Mannu Bhandari is one of the popular story writers of Hindi.  The play based on his novel ‘Mahabhoj’ (1979), which exposed the depth of the suffering and pain of the common man amidst the corruption in the bureaucracy, became very popular.  Similarly, the film ‘Rajnigandha’ based on ‘Yhi Sach Hai’ became very popular and also won the Best Film of 1974 award. 

Controversy over “Aap Ka Bunty” film adaptation

Bhandari sold the rights to his second novel ‘Aap Ka Bunty’ and it was later adapted for a film produced by Dharmendra Goel and later directed by Sisir Mishra.  This film, Sami Ki Dhara, starred Shabana Azmi, Shatrughan Sinha, Tina Munim and Vinod Mehra.  Bhandari later sued the filmmaker Kale Vikas Pictures Pvt Ltd that the adaptation distorted his novel and consequently violated Section 57 of the Indian Copyright Act, 1957.  

The judgment in this case, Manu Krishna Vs. Kala Vikas Motion Pictures Ltd. is a landmark judgment in the Indian copyright law that clarifies the scope of the author’s moral rights under the Indian copyright law.  The court was in favor of Bhandari, but he and the producer eventually reached an out-of-court settlement.
