Otto Wichterle Google Doodle: Born in 1913 in Prostejov, Czech Republic (then, Austria-Hungary), Vichterle earned his doctorate in organic chemistry from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in 1936.

The doodle depicts Otto Wichterle holding a piece of contact lens on his fingers. 

Google Doodle Otto Wichterle: Google is celebrating the 108th birthday of Czech chemist Otto wichterle with a doodle today.  Otto Wichterle is best known for inventing the modern soft contact lens.  It is now used by around 140 million people worldwide for their eye needs.  The doodle depicts Otto Viktorl holding a piece of contact lens on his fingers, while the Google logo is shown in the background as a reflection after light falls on the eye. 

Born in 1913 in Prostejov, Czech Republic (then, Austria-Hungary), Otto Wichterle received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in 1936. He developed an absorbent and transparent gel for eye implants while teaching as a professor during the 1950s.

  • Otto Wichterle was born on this day in 1913 in Prostjov, Czech Republic (then Austria-Hungary).  After finishing high school in Prostojov, Otto Wichterle choose science for his career. 
  • He began studying at the Chemical and Technical Faculty of the Czech Technical University, but he was also interested in medicine.  He graduated in 1936 and then received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in 1936. 
  • Because of his exemplary work as an inventor and researcher, he was elected the first President of the Academy of the Czech Republic since the country’s founding in 1993. 
  • Later in his career, an asteroid was named after him in the year 1993.  In addition, a high school in Ostrava (in Poruba district) in the Czech Republic was named after him on September 1, 2006. 

This achievement is also in the name of Victor 

He had a hand in the opening of its fifth macromolecular, division, of which he would become the first president, and he gained further credit for combining the separate areas of pure and applied chemistry within it for general administrative purposes.

Otto Wichterle is known beyond the borders of his country not only through his achievements but also because of his activities in international organizations, the chief of which was the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

He participated in the preparation of its Prague symposium in 1957 and 1965, which was well received by the participants.

Political turmoil pushed Viktor out of ICT, but that didn’t stop him from continuing his development. He continued to work on his hydrogel development at home.  Otto Wichterle himself used to wear glasses.

Because of these inventions and research, Otto Wichterle was elected the first President of the Academy of the Czech Republic after the country’s founding in 1993.  Remembering Viktorl on his 108th birth anniversary, Google said, “Happy birthday, Otto Wichterle, thank you for helping the world see each other.”

In 1961 Otto Wichterle produced the very first soft contact lenses with a children’s erector set, a bicycle light battery, a phonograph motor, and DIY tools made from homemade glass tubing and molds. The genius of Otto Viktel can be gauged from the fact that he invented this lens at his home.
