World Heart Day History

World Heart Day is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of the month of September from the year it was established until 2010. It is an effective event established in 2000 and from the year 2000 onwards the year 2011 every World Heart was organized by the Federation  , it was began to be celebrated annually on 29 September (no longer on the last Sunday of the month) 

The World Cardiovascular Association and its members actively disseminate news to the general public about premature deaths from heart disease and its risk factors (tobacco use, lack of physical exercise, unhealthy diet and alcohol consumption)  involved in the festivities.  The World Heart Federation has many partners in this campaign, including several major international non-profits.  Through this campaign several effective preventive measures are promoted to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. 

About the World Heart Federation

The World Heart Federation (WHF), a non-governmental organization, is based in Geneva, Switzerland.  An International Society of Cardiology was established in 1946 and International Cardiology Federation in 1970 both organizations were merged to form International Society and Federation of Cardiology (ISFC) later in 1978 the name International Society and Federation of Cardiology changed to World  Heart Federation in 1998. 

About World Heart Federation

It has established the World Heart Day 2021 campaign to be celebrated every year on 29 September in 2000.  The organization and its members are committed to fighting heart diseases and stroke.  The strategy of this federation is specifically focusing on vulnerable areas of the world.

Data collected in lockdown: The Cardiological Society of India has conducted a study on the cases of heart attack in 200 hospitals of the country from March to June i.e. during the lockdown period.  During this, about 41 thousand cases of heart attack were reported in these hospitals.  However, the data is yet to be analyzed. 

According to a study published in the Lancet journal, the fastest growing heart disease in the country, there has been a 50 percent increase in the number of heart patients in India between 1990 and 2016.  The death toll from heart attacks has also doubled over the years.  In India, 1.3 million people died of heart disease in 1990, which increased to 2.8 million in 2016.  In the year 1990, the number of heart patients was 2.57 crore, which increased to 5.45 crore in the year 2016.
