The UN has issued a warning to the world community that the hunting of black rhinoceros, called the engineers of the ecosystem, has increased the risk of extinction of their species as well as causing heavy damage to tourism. The United Nations has expressed deep concern about the continuous hunting of this rare species of rhinoceros. At the same time, global organizations working for animals have issued warnings to top leaders around the world asking them to emphasize their conservation.
Reason behind the Hunting of Black Rhinos
In the report of rhinos being killed for horns and skin, their horns and skin have become the reason behind the hunting of black rhinos. A large amount of protein called keratin is present in their horn. This protein is abundant in the back skin along with the hair and hooves of the black rhinoceros. Medicines are made from this protein to get rid of many types of deadly diseases. Powder made from horns is considered to be the perfect medicine to end hangover.
It is sold at a high price in the international market. Poaching in India has decreased by 86 percent. Speaking to IANS, India’s Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Sukalvaidya said that in the last three years, poaching for the prized rhino horns has come down by 86 percent. Due to this the number of one-horned rhinos in Assam has gone up to 2,640. Assam has the largest number of one-horned rhinos in the world.
