Why is it important to protect the soil?

  • Soil is home to more than 25% of the Earth’s living biodiversity, with many more living beings living in healthy soil than people living on Earth.
  • Organisms living in soil work day and night throughout the year to maintain life on earth.
  • 95% of our food comes from soil.
  • Organisms living in the soil help to store carbon.
  • Every year about 50% of the earth’s soil passes through the bowels of earthworms.

Today there is an indiscriminate felling of trees all over the world, due to which there has been a huge decline in the number of trees.  The roots of the trees bind the soil so that the soil absorbs water during floods or heavy rains.

But due to the lack of trees, the soil is not able to absorb water due to heavy rains today, as a result of which disasters like floods come, along with the soil also gets washed away. India and many countries appear to be shrinking due to soil erosion and the supply of space is very important for any country with a growing population, thus shrinking of the country is a matter of concern, that is why we need to pay attention to soil conservation.
