Major Dhyan Chandra was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad (currently renamed as Prayagraj) district of Uttar Pradesh.  This was the auspicious day when the world mainly India got a young hockey player who has illuminated the name of India along with his own in the field of hockey with his amazing talents.  He led the Indian hockey team from the year 1926 and continuously made India proud with 3 Olympic gold medals.

When these hockey players used to enter the playground, people used to keep watching their hockey and ball coordination. Many times the players also accuse him that their hockey is made from some special material.  But all this was nothing more than a lie. The main objective of celebrating National Sports Day is to increase the enthusiasm and awareness of sports among the youth, so that on the occasion of National Sports Day 2023, they understand the importance of sports and come out in the future.

This year on National Sports Day, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports would be conducting ‘Meet The Champion’ program across 26 schools in the country. This initiative will witness the participation of some high-profile athletes of the country, the likes of which include World Champion and Commonwealth Games 2023 gold medallist Nikhat Zareen, table tennis star as well as CWG 2023 gold medal winner Bhavina Patel among others. Also, as part of the Fit India Mission, people at schools, colleges and governmemt institutions would be encouraged to participate in sporting activities for atleast one hour.

Organized on the occasion of the birthday of Major Dhyanchand, the National Sports Day program is organized in primary schools, in coaching institutes in big universities and in sports academy.  Although National Sports Day is celebrated all over India, in some states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, National Sports Day is celebrated in a very exciting way.  On this day, sports activities are organized in schools and tournaments of football, basketball, cricket, kabaddi, hockey are organized.
