The Ministry of Railways announced that the shifting of trains to the upgraded Passenger Reservation System will begin in August. During a review meeting held at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed officials to ensure that passengers do not face inconvenience during the transition from the 40-year-old reservation system to the upgraded platform.

Union Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu were also present during the review meeting at Rail Bhavan.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the upgraded system has been developed to support growing ticketing demand and improve the passenger booking experience through modern technology integration.

Passenger Reservation System Introduced in 1986

Indian Railways introduced the Passenger Reservation System in 1986. Over the last four decades, the system underwent several minor changes and upgrades. However, the Ministry stated that the reservation system has now been completely overhauled and its capacity has been significantly expanded using state-of-the-art technology.

Currently, nearly 88% of the total train ticketing demand in the country is fulfilled through online channels, reflecting the increasing dependence on digital railway services.

RailOne App Expands Digital Railway Services

Indian Railways launched the RailOne mobile application in July last year as part of its digital transformation initiatives. The app has rapidly gained popularity among railway passengers across the country.

According to Railway officials, the app has recorded more than 3.5 crore downloads nationwide within less than a year of its launch. The app has been downloaded 3.16 crore times through the Google Play Store and 33.17 lakh times on Apple devices.

Every day, approximately 9.29 lakh tickets are booked through the application across the country, including:

  • 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets
  • 2.09 lakh reserved tickets

Railway officials stated that unreserved ticket figures also include platform tickets.

AI-Based Waitlist Prediction Feature Gains Attention

One of the major features introduced in the RailOne app earlier this year is the AI-based waitlist confirmation prediction system. The feature informs passengers whether a waitlisted ticket is likely to get confirmed after booking.

According to Indian Railways, the accuracy of waitlist confirmation prediction has improved significantly from 53% earlier to 94% now. Railway authorities stated that the feature has been widely appreciated by users.

The RailOne app also offers several integrated railway services, including:

  • Reserved ticket booking
  • Unreserved ticket booking
  • Platform ticket booking
  • Ticket cancellation and refunds
  • Real-time ticket waiting status
  • Train schedules
  • Live train running status
  • Platform information
  • Coach position details
  • Rail Madad passenger assistance services
  • Food ordering during travel

Passengers can order food directly through the application and receive delivery at their seats during train journeys.

Indian Railways Continues Passenger Subsidy Support

Indian Railways stated that it remains a lifeline for passengers across the country. During 2024–25, Indian Railways provided a subsidy of ₹60,239 crore on passenger tickets.

According to Railway data, this subsidy is equivalent to an average discount of 43% for every railway passenger. Railway officials explained that if the cost of providing railway services is ₹100, passengers pay only ₹57 as ticket fare.

Reservation System Upgrade Reflects Railways’ Digital Push

The transition to the upgraded Passenger Reservation System reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on digital transformation and technology-driven passenger services. Since the introduction of internet-based ticket booking in 2002, railway ticketing has increasingly shifted to online platforms.

With the rollout of the upgraded reservation system beginning in August, Indian Railways aims to improve booking efficiency, passenger convenience, and digital accessibility while ensuring that the transition from the existing system takes place without inconvenience to commuters. Railway officials stated that the upgraded system is expected to benefit lakhs of passengers travelling through Indian Railways across the country.

Technology With Responsible Human Values

As Indian Railways continues upgrading its reservation infrastructure to improve passenger convenience and accessibility, the development also reflects the broader importance of using technology with responsibility and public welfare in mind. Alongside modern systems and digital efficiency, spiritual awareness continues to remind society about discipline, honesty, patience, and service towards others.

Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj explains that true progress is achieved when material advancement is balanced with ethical conduct and peaceful social values. Such guidance encourages individuals to use modern resources in a responsible and human-centred manner.
